The Cumann Staire (Historic Studies Society) of Ollscoil na hÉireann, Gaillimh - National University of Ireland, Galway hosts the annual Aistir conference 25 - 28 May 2010. Conference attendees are expected to present a paper and/or particiapte in a seminar group. While there are limited number of slots for those wishing to present an academic paper there will be enough seminar groups to accommodate all.

Papers must include comparative elements, either between countries/regions or by examining an local event or trend in light international experience. Examples would be: comparing historical events in an Italian city state with those experienced by another European region or state; examining the validity of using an international model to explain changes witnessed in a given mediaeval kingdom; presenting a paper on the religious struggles of 16th century France which devoted a part to their context within a greater Western European model; looking at the effects of international political writings within a paper focused on the revolts within German states in 1848. Thus the paper may devote a greater , or lesser, amount of space to an international dimension. A maximum 200 word abstract of each paper should be submitted along with a brief personal profile. The presentation of a paper should be around twenty minutes in length, with questions and answers to follow.

Depending on the demand for each seminar group the conference organisers may merge or cancel groups to result in the correct balance of groups and participants. Once an applicant has been confirmed in a particular group, and has accepted this, they will be expected to choose which area of the group's topic they will work on. The conference organisers will ensure that all major aspects of each seminar group's topic is covered by the group participants. Seminar presentations are normally up to ten minutes in length and are followed by a group discussion. At the end of the seminar work each group will produce a group document to be presented to the other groups. The Aistir organisers will provide guidelines, advice and objectives for both group participants and the seminar group as a whole. The seminar group titles will be announced closer to the date of the conference.

Travelling from abroad to attend Aistir would normally be by air to Dublin, Galway, or Shannon airports. Travel via Belfast, Cork or Ireland West Airport is also possible.

Galway is easily reachable by bus and train from many locations. Direct bus services from Dublin airport to Galway city are provided by Citylink and GoBus.ie. A bus service from Shannon airport to Galway city is provided by Bus Éireann and Citylink. Frequent bus services from Dublin, Cork, and Limerick are provided by Bus Éireann and Citylink. A train service from Dublin's (Seán) Heuston Station to (Éamonn) Ceannt Station Galway is provided by Iarnród Éireann. Students who may be travelling to Galway from Belfast can travel by train via Dublin, or by bus with Bus Éireann via Enniskillen and Sligo. See relevant company websites for more details.
